Liberty Mncube i
Liberty Mncube is the Chief Economist at the Competition Commission (appointed in January 2014) and he is also an Honorary Professor of Economics with the Department of Economics at the University of Stellenbosch (appointed in January 2016).
As Chief Economist, Prof Mncube advises the Competition Commission on competition regulation and policy issues. Prof Mncube has submitted written testimony before the Competition Tribunal and given expert oral economic testimony before the Competition Tribunal.
Prof Mncube is also a member of the Ministerial Advisory Panel on Drafting Changes to the Competition Act (2017). He is also an Associate of CRESSE [Competition and Regulation European Summer School and Conference]. Prior to joining the Competition Commission (September 2007), Prof Mncube was a Researcher at the Development Policy Research Unit (DPRU), University of Cape Town.
He received a PhD in Economics [Industrial Organisation] from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and was a visiting PhD student at the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics. He received an MSc in Economics from the University of York. He has published widely on competition policy and economics in leading local and international journals, including the Journal of Competition Law and Economics; the Journal of Industry, Competition and Trade; Agrekon; Studies in Economics and Econometrics; and the South African Journal of Economic and Management Sciences.
His new book (with Eleanor Fox and Tembinkosi Bonakele), titled “Competition Policy for the New Era” published by Oxford University Press is forthcoming in November, 2017
