Junior Cartels Investigator sought for a career in the dynamic field of competition law enforcement. The Cartels Division of the Competition Commission seeks to fill a vacancy for a Junior Cartels Investigator. Skills & Experience

Minimum Requirements

At least an LLB degree or equivalent qualification and 1-3 years working experience in complex investigations. Experience in investigating competition law cases will be an added advantage.
Ability to undertake complex investigations independently and within multidisciplinary teams; lead investigation teams; possess written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills; and stakeholder management skills.
Working experience in information collection and analysis, both on a tactical and strategic level.

Key Accountabilities:

Reporting to the Cartels Divisional Manager, the Junior Cartels Investigator’s duties include, amongst others:

To investigate contraventions of section 4(1) (b) of the Competition Act.

To administer the Commission’s Corporate Leniency Policy.

To write, review and present investigation reports.

To assist with executing strategy and the business plan of the Division

The Competition Commission is seeking to recruit a dynamic, hard-working and committed individuals to fill positions of Senior Economist in the Economic Research Bureau. The job requires applicants to have a need to achieve results in a logical manner, whilst at the same time maintaining quality and ensuring that standards are met. The job calls for an analytical person who is capable of communicating facts and information to others. The job holder should be consistent, adaptable, precise, careful, self-starting, inquisitive, friendly and confident within the required area of knowledge and expertise. The job has some specialist or technical aspects and is likely to expose the successful candidate to different aspects of competition law and economics.

Skills & Experience

Minimum Requirements

Applicants MUST have a Masters degree in Economics, with training and experience in Advanced Microeconomics, Applied Micro Econometrics, Industrial Organization and International Trade being an advantage.
A minimum of 5 years’ competition and regulatory environment work experience.
Strong analytical skills and experience in managing research are essential.
Knowledge and understanding of the purpose and objectives of the Competition Act, the Competition Commission and the South African economy is highly recommended.

Duties and Key Responsibilities:

Provide guidance to economist(s) and junior economist(s) in the Division with regards to case analysis.
Identify research activities and priorities relevant to the development of competition policy. Report and account for case activities in the division.
Advise other divisions with regard to economic underpinnings of competition issues.
Contribute to the provision of the theoretical and intellectual platform for the effective implementation of the Competition Act.
Take the lead on any economic analysis on investigative cases for mergers and abuse of dominance, including drafting those elements of the report.
Take the lead on research reports, write conference papers, and contribute to the economic approach to competition law assessment.
Management skills in the oversight of junior economists

    The Role

    Competition law and economics are fast growing areas linked to the dynamic field of competition policy in South Africa and abroad. The Competition Commission requires young dynamic graduates, enthusiastic and energetic, with an aptitude for research and analysis to join the Competition Commission as Graduate Trainees.
    The Competition Commission is responsible for: investigating and assessing anti-competitive behaviour in response to complaints, investigating large mergers, making referral to the Competition Tribunal; and investigating and deciding on intermediate mergers. In addition, it undertakes advocacy work to promote compliance with the Competition Act.

    Please note the programme is available on a twelve 12-18 months fixed term contract.
