The Commission has initiated a market inquiry into the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) sector in South Africa. The inquiry commenced on 15 September 2014 and the investigation was finalized on 31 March 2017. The handover of the report to the Minister is on 24 April 2017 and formal publication of the report in the Government Gazette will be on 28 April 2017.
The Commission initiated the inquiry because it has reason to believe that there are features of the sector that may prevent, distort or restrict competition. The Commission had received a number of complaints in the LPG sector which also provided further basis for initiating the market inquiry. Further, the Commission believes that conducting this inquiry assisted in understanding how it may promote competition in the LPG sector in furtherance of the purposes of the Act.
