Dr Ntuthuko Bhengu is a passive shareholder in an investment holding company, AfrikaBiopharma Investments (Pty) Ltd, which in turn is a shareholder in Biotech Laboratories (Pty) Ltd. Dr Bhengu has previously held an executive director position at Biotech Laboratories, as well as executive management positions at Clinix Health Group and Metropolitan Health.Dr Bhengu’s wife, a medical practitioner, is not in clinical practice but is employed as a technical lead for HLSP, a consulting company contracted by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) to manage the South Africa’s Revitalised Response to AIDS and Health(SARRAH) Programme. Dr Bhengu is a member of Discovery Health Medical Scheme.

 

Dr van Gent has worked for public sector organisations, both within the Netherlands and internationally, on competition policy, economic regulation of energy markets, transparency metrics in healthcare markets and competition in health systems. Prior to his appointment as a panel member for this inquiry, he had not done any work for South African companies or public sector organisations.

 

Professor Sharon Fonn is employed by the University of the Witwatersrand. She was seconded by the University to the Board of Section 27 and was an active board member from 2006 until January 2014. Professor Fonn is a member of the University of the Witwatersrand’s Staff Medical Aid Scheme.

 

Dr Lungiswa Nkonki is a member of Bonitas Medical Scheme.

Ms. Tamara Paremoer is a member of Discovery Health Medical Scheme.

 

Mr Keith Weeks has two sisters-in-law who work in the private healthcare sector. The one is a practicing optometrist with a private practice in Durban. The second is a qualified pharmacist who works for Discovery Health (Pty) Ltd as a Chronic Illness Benefits Assessor. Mr Weeks is a member of the University of the Witwatersrand’s Staff Medical Aid Scheme.

 

Ms Pamela Halse is a member of Discovery Health Medical Scheme.

 

Ms Mapato Ramokgopa has an aunt and an uncle who are medical doctors in private practice, in Welkom (Free State) and a cousin who works as an accountant at Discovery Holdings Limited. Mapato is a member of Discovery Health Medical Scheme.

 

Ms Neelofah Ally has a family member (a cousin) who is a pharmacist and runs his own pharmacy in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal and another family member (her cousin’s husband) who is a doctor, specialising in psychiatry, in private practice with consultation rooms at a Life Hospital inFourways, Johannesburg. She is a member of Discovery Health Medical Scheme.

 

Mr Sipho Mtombeni has two family member (mother and aunt) that are registered nurses in Gauteng and the Free State respectively. Sipho is a member of Discovery Health Medical Scheme.

 

Ms Londiwe Senona’s mother is a registered nurse working at a private hospital in Durban. Londiwe is a member of GEMS.
